Farm animal sanctuary

The Farm Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to rescue and give a permanent home to sick, injured and abused farm animals including sheep, goats, pigs, horses, ponies, guinea pigs, ducks, geese, turkeys,
hens and cockerels.

Operating from Bromsgrove and Evesham in England, the Sanctuary is today home to more than 500 animals and relies on the support of volunteers to carry out most of the hard work. Funding is normally raised at various events, open days and sales and the Sanctuary has developed a great working relationship with local schools. Maureen Lawless, Secretary:

“In this way we feel that our rescued animals can repay those who help by giving them valuable experience in animal welfare which we hope will stay with them all their lives.”

Unfortunately, however, in 2001, as a result of the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in the vicinity, all usual methods of fundraising were brought to a standstill and the animals were confined to just a small portion of land to prevent further
contamination.

“We really do appreciate your kind donation, at this time of year, before the grass starts growing, we find that we have to spend more to keep our charges fit and healthy.” Maureen Lawless.

Caring for animals is but one dimension of their truly compassionate work. The Farm Animal Sanctuary also campaigns against the abuse of animals in markets and acts as a “watchdog” to ensure sick or injured animals are not offered up for sale.

Early in 2002, the Onaway Trust received an urgent proposal from the Farm Animal Sanctuary for financial support towards the purchase of foodstuff as the previous year had left them with food bills of nearly £400 per week! Onaway responded by making a grant of £2000 to the Farm Animal Sanctuary to help bridge a gap and provide sustenance during the remaining winter months.

Reasons why we help animals

Sally the sheep
Sally the sheep

Sally has a permanent limp. When she was five months old her dealer owner threw her down the ramp of a lorry. Her thighbone snapped. She was later chased around his farmyard several times a day to give his young sheepdog "experience", her back leg broken and trailing.

Spirit has been blind ever since he was born in 1992. His mother died giving birth to him. His farmer-owner bottle-fed Spirit to fatten him up so he could be sold for slaugher. A local family heard of Spirit's plight and bought him from the farmer bringing him to the Sanctuary.

Sally and Spirit are two of the lucky ones. They will now live out their days in peace along with an increasing number of abused and neglected farm animals.
